JJ Muñoz

A native of Phoenix, Arizona, Jose "J.J." Muñoz has worked in the education sector in Arizona, Florida, and Massachusetts. After pursuing his master's degree in School Leadership at Harvard's Graduate School of Education, he led two different schools as a principal in Massachusetts. According to state testing, as principal, students achieved the highest student growth in the ELA and math in the district. Also, multiple schools have considerably decreased with behavior referrals, more than 50%, under J.J.'s leadership. Building a strong, positive culture in his school community, J.J. implemented the school's inaugural Amazing Shake Competition, teaching students how to conduct themselves in real-world scenarios with executives in the greater Boston area. The school established a house system to enhance inclusion within the community and strengthen relationships across grade levels between staff and students. Before school administration, J.J. served as an English Language Arts (ELA) and Academic Engagement Coach in Pine Hills, Florida. He was responsible for school-wide motivation, engagement, and culture for students and staff. As an English Language Arts Coach, he collaborated with teachers using culturally relevant materials and data-driven instruction and provided teachers feedback and support. During that time, the school grew from a school letter grade "F" to a "C." J.J. loves the arts and expands opportunities for students to study performing arts. He was a performer at Walt Disney World and a principal dancer for mambo dance company Stilo in Phoenix, Arizona. J.J. is deeply committed to increasing educational equity for all students while holding himself, students, and colleagues accountable.
